Daria Koltsova is an artist who is making a name for herself as one of the leading figures of the contemporary Ukrainian scene in these difficult times for her people, subjected to the distresses of war. Born in 1987 in Kharkov, Ukraine, and graduate of the Kharkov Academy of Design and Art in art history and theory, she originally settled in Kiev, but since the war spread across the country, she has taken refuge first in Berlin and then in Oxford, UK, while frequently returning to her native Odessa to work. Since 2014 and the annexation of Crimea by Russia and the war in Donbass, her artistic work, which includes installations, performances and videos, focuses on the effects of war and questions the possibilities of protection and resilience. Her approach combines the political and the intimate both plastically and conceptually. Her work succeeds in making current geopolitical and social situations sensitive and tangible, combining intimate perceptions with their repercussions on human beings. Moving away from an attempt at realistic representation, she outlines images that come from the realities of war, often as a result of historical or iconographic research. The artist also draws on people's experiences and stories. The artist understands that war has changed everything and that art must make these changes visible in her own way.
